January Highlights
January marks the heart of summer in Southern Africa. In South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe, and Zambia, this is the rainy season. Expect lush green landscapes, dramatic skies, and afternoon thunderstorms that breaks the heat.
While wildlife is harder to spot due to dense vegetation and dispersed water sources, this is a fantastic time for birdwatching and photography.
In Tanzania, the southern Serengeti is alive with the Great Migration’s calving season. Thousands of wildebeest give birth, attracting predators and offering thrilling wildlife encounters.
Zanzibar is hot and humid but still a popular beach destination. Nothing like cooling down in the clear blue ocean!
In Kenya, the Maasai Mara is in its green season—less crowded and excellent for photography, though wildlife is more spread out.
February Highlights
February continues the green season across Southern Africa. While game viewing is not at its peak, the landscapes are stunning, and lodges often offer lower rates.
In Botswana and Zambia, some remote camps might become inaccessible due to heavy rains causing local flooding.
In the Serengeti, the calving season continues, making it one of the best times to witness predator-prey interactions.
Zanzibar remains warm and tropical, ideal for beach lovers.
Kenya sees similar conditions to January: lush, quiet, and beautiful.
March Highlights
March signals the tail end of the rainy season in Southern Africa. The bush is still thick, but the rains begin to ease. This is a transitional month: less rain, but still green and vibrant. As it is less hot, this is a good time for those safari-goers who prefer to avoid the crowds coming in peak season.
In Tanzania, the migration begins moving northwest toward the Grumeti region. Zanzibar remains hot and humid.
Kenya is on the cusp of its long rains, but still offers good game viewing with fewer tourists.
April Highlights
April is typically the wettest month in East Africa. In Kenya and Tanzania, the long rains begin in earnest, making some roads impassable and game viewing more challenging. However, the landscapes are lush and beautiful.
In Southern Africa, the rains begin to taper off. South Africa enters autumn, with cooler temperatures and clearer skies. One of our favourite months for safari in South Africa.
Botswana, Namibia, and Zimbabwe start drying out, making travel easier and wildlife viewing more reliable.
May Highlights
May is a shoulder season and a hidden gem for safari-goers. The rains have mostly ended in Southern Africa, and the bush begins to thin out. Wildlife becomes easier to spot, and the weather is cooler and more comfortable. Together with the month of April, our favourite month for safari on South Africa.
In Zambia and Zimbabwe, Victoria Falls is at its most dramatic with high water volumes.
In Tanzania, the migration moves toward the western corridor.
Zanzibar is still in its rainy season.
June Highlights
June marks the start of the dry season and the beginning of peak safari time in Southern Africa. Days are sunny and cool, and wildlife congregates around water sources, making sightings more predictable.
In Botswana, it might still be dry and dormant before the Okavango Delta floods arrive. In the Chobe area, peak safari season begins.
Namibia offers clear skies and excellent desert photography.
In Tanzania, the migration reaches the Grumeti River. Get ready for dramatic scenery as the wildebeest start corssing the river.
July Highlights
July is one of the best months for safari across all regions. Dry conditions prevail, and wildlife viewing is exceptional.
In South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe, and Zambia, animals gather at waterholes, and the bush is sparse. Game Reserves and national parks are quite busy. Excellent sightings but also a lot of traffic, unless you book in a private reserve.
In Tanzania, the migration is in the northern Serengeti, with dramatic river crossings. Kenya’s Maasai Mara begins to see the arrival of the migration herds from the Serengeti.
Zanzibar enjoys perfect beach weather.
August Highlights
August is peak safari season. Game viewing is at its best, and the weather is dry and sunny across all destinations.
As a special mention, in Botswana, the Delta is normally in full flood by this time, offering stunning scenery and boat (mokoro) safaris.
The Serengeti and Maasai Mara are alive with the Great Migration, including thrilling river crossings.
Zanzibar is idyllic for beach holidays, with warm, dry weather.
September Highlights
September continues the dry season and is arguably the best (and most popular) month for safaris. Wildlife is abundant. In Southern Africa, the weather starts to warm up, breaking from the cold months.
In Namibia, the desert landscapes are particularly photogenic.
In East Africa, the migration is still active in the Maasai Mara and northern Serengeti.
Zanzibar remains a top beach destination with excellent weather conditions.
October Highlights
October is the last month of the dry season in many regions. Temperatures rise, and animals are concentrated around dwindling water sources, making for excellent game viewing.
Perhaps your last chance to do a safari in Southern Africa in the dry season before the rains and summer heat arrive.
In Tanzania, the migration begins moving south again, back from the Maasai Mara. Kenya remains good for safari, though the rains may begin late in the month.
November Highlights
November brings the start of the short rains in East Africa and the first rains in Southern Africa. This is a transitional month—less predictable weather, but dramatic skies and rejuvenated landscapes.
Temperatures start to soar in Southern Africa, making early morning and late afternoon game drives the best suited to spot wildlife.
In Tanzania, the migration returns to the southern Serengeti. Zanzibar sees brief, refreshing showers. Kenya enters its green season, with fewer tourists and vibrant scenery.
