The Essential Garden Route Adventure

Join us for the quintessential journey on the Garden Route! Our exciting 5-day group adventure tour is a safe and affordable way to explore the Western Cape, Little Karoo, Whale Route, Addo Elephant National Park, and Route 62. The tour has a good mix of nature, culture and adventure, so you can have the best experience the Garden Route has to offer. This tour starts in Cape Town / Stellenbosch every Monday and ends in Port Elizabeth every Friday.

Note: A 6-Day option is also available, where you will return to Cape Town on Day 6.

Day 1: Cape Town – Hermanus – Cape Agulhas

We depart from Cape Town/Stellenbosch early on Monday morning for Hermanus. (Shark cage diving clients will be picked up very early in the morning by the diving operator, and will miss the first half of Day 1). We follow the scenic coastal road, stopping at Betties Bay to view a colony of endangered African penguins. You can spend the afternoon in the seaside resort town of Hermanus, famous for hundreds of Southern Right Whales during the whale season (July to November) and many shops, restaurants and markets. In the afternoon we will drive on to Cape Agulhas, the most southern tip of Africa, where we visit a viewpoint known as the “real” place where the Indian and Atlantic Oceans meet.

Meals included: Dinner

Optional activities:

  • Shark Cage Diving, R2380
  • Whale Watching Boat Trip (in season, July – November), approx ZAR800

Day 2: Cape Agulhas – Oudtshoorn

We travel to Oudtshoorn in the Little Karoo, known as the Ostrich Capital of the World, via the spectacular Route 62, which is South Africa’s longest wine route. We will have a lovely lunch and wine tasting at a local winery, before experiencing the subterranean beauty of the Cango Caves on a guided adventure tour.

Included meals: Breakfast and dinner

Day 3: Oudtshoorn – Knysna – Sedgefield

After breakfast we head over the marvellous Outeniqua Mountain pass where we will explore Wilderness National Park with some canoes. Enjoy a paddle up the Touw River through indigenous forest, enjoying the abundance of birdlife. After about 40 minutes, the canoes will be left for a 2km hike along a boardwalk, which will take us to a lovely waterfall and rock pools. After the canoeing, we will head to the famous town of Knysna via the lavish Lake District of the Garden Route. This up-market little town is filled with curios, restaurants and a waterfront, where you will be able to relax and do some shopping.  After Knysna we will head to the Knysna Heads viewpoint for some magnificent views over Knysna River estuary and the Indian Ocean. Late afternoon you can spend exploring Sedgefield with its expansive views and beaches.

Included meals: Breakfast and dinner

Day 4: Sedgefield - Tsitsikamma - Addo

After breakfast, off to Tsitsikamma National Park. En route we will stop at Bloukrans Bridge to view the world’s highest bungee jump bridge (216 meters). There is plenty of time for the adventure seekers among you to test their courage. The late morning will be spent in Tsitsikamma National Park with its unique combination of indigenous forest and beautiful Indian Ocean coastline. Below are some ideas and helpful tips on what you specifically need for this trip.

  • Comfortable closed shoes for some activities where open shoes will not be fitting
  • Lightweight clothing. You will need to bring a mixture of lightweight clothing, some warm items for the evenings. Avoid nylon and other synthetics, which can be very uncomfortable in hot weather. Ex-military or military style clothing and equipment is NOT recommended.
  • A waterproof/windproof jacket is a good idea for wet days (which can happen often in winter times)
  • Warm fleece and beanie for morning and evening game drives.
  • Towel (or travel towel)

  • Insect repellent. South Africa does have mosquitoes which can, at times, be a bit bothersome.
  • Water bottle. Golden rule: Always keep hydrated!
  • Camera / Smartphone with a spare battery or power bank.
  • Earplugs to guard against a snoring roommate (if sharing)
  • A good book, a journal or smartphone with music for the long drives

As a general rule, travel luggage should not exceed 20KG in weight and should comprise of one large bag for the luggage area, and a smaller bag to keep with you inside the vehicle with personal items. Traditional, framed suitcases are not recommended as they are large and can damage other travellers belongings while on the road. Backpacks or duffel bags are an ideal choice.

Please try to avoid bringing unnecessary valuables, and speak to your tour leader about the recommended measures to keep your money, passport, and airline tickets safe during the journey. It’s also a good idea to purchase a money belt or pouch that is easily hidden. We strongly recommend that you photocopy all important documents e.g. air tickets, passport, vaccination certificate, etc. and keep the copies separate from the originals. While not valid, a photocopy makes it very much easier to obtain replacements if necessary.

While our vehicles have emergency charging points for phones, we strongly recommend power banks to keep your electronic devices going during the day.
