Amphitheatre Backpackers Lodge
Live on the edge of the cliff, in style
Midway between Johannesburg and Durban on an idyllic piece of land, encircled by awe-inspiring mountains you will find Amphitheatre Backpackers. The lodge takes its name from “The Amphitheatre," the most famous geographic feature of the Northern Drakensberg, South Africa. The Amphitheatre is widely regarded as one of the most impressive cliff faces on earth. The lodge looks directly onto its facade and on a clear day, after the rains, the Tugela Falls can be seen as it plunges 1km down the ancient rock face.
The grasslands are populated with buck, small mammals and an abundance of bird life that thrive in the dams, river and wetlands. It is not just the natural beauty that has people talking, the architecture is also fantastic. Unique dwellings are crafted from stone and thatch, with stained glass, mosaics, metal and wooden carvings. Some rooms are located in converted grain silos, using solar energy to heat the water and the entire place is surrounded by beautiful indigenous rockeries.Join us in the restaurant for delicious meals made cooked up from ingredients grown in our organic veggie patch. Listen to live music while you eat... as part of our SING FOR YOUR SUPPER SERIES
This is one of those places that you plan to stay at for one night and end up staying a week. There is just so much to do here and then of course there is that spectacular view. From the lawn a picture postcard panorama takes in the entire Northern range from the Amphitheatre all the way to Cathkin Peak, enticing you to explore it!
The Drakensberg is the premier hiking destination in South Africa and the Northern Drakensberg is regarded by many as the most dramatic section of all, with access to the highest country in the world, "Lesotho," the biggest indigenous forest in the berg, the largest consolidation of rock art in the world and the 2nd highest waterfall on the planet.
